Fairbanks Alaska

The Last Frontierfairbanks alaska

High in the land of the midnight sun, Fairbanks Alaska sits near the top of the world in the heart of the last frontier.

Univerity of Alaska Fairbanks

Home of the prestigious University Alaska Fairbanks, one of the nations top geophysics training institutions and located in the interior of Alaska, the city of Fairbanks is a world away from what residents refer to as “the lower 48", referring of course, to the other states of the United States.

Fairbanks Population

With a massive urban area population of just over 50,000 people, Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska, behind the states major metropolitan area Anchorage.

Fairbanks Weather

The climate in this rugged part of the state creates massive seasonal temperature swings,  from the upper 90s at the peak of summer, to sub-freezing temperatures in the winter.  Icy and windblown in the winter, Fairbanks temperatures plunge to sixty below or lower.

The beautiful summers bring out the best that the Alaskan interior has to offer.   Sunny Fairbanks is a popular tourist destination during that time of year, and as many as 350,000 visitors may descend on the city during the tourist season.

Very centrally located, Fairbanks functions as a supply center for the small towns and villages which dot the central tundra of Alaska.  Small planes supply food and goods to remote villages, and those places that have roads often receive their shipments by truck during the summer, when the permafrost is navigable.

The lifestyle of the Fairbanks resident is very seasonal.   Residents venture outdoors in the summer during the long bright days, and indoors or navigating underground tunnels during the descent of the long arctic winter

While a brave few may venture outside during the winter, it is a dangerous activity and not to be taken lightly.

As the seasons change, and the flowers of the tundra bloom the days grow long.   When they describe the land of the midnight sun, it is not an exaggeration.   Long beautiful Alaskan days await those who have made it through the harsh winter.

Small Town Life

For those who prefer the small town life, Fairbanks offers its share of experiences.  Located in the remote heart of the Alaskan wilderness, wildlife is abundant and the community is small enough to be bonded closely.    An influx of college students from around the state and around the nation keep the city vigorous with change.
